June has been filled with quite the variety of experiences for us—some planned, some spontaneous. It’s been a particularly memorable month, as we’ve checked multiple items off our bucket list.
Our mindset has basically been…it’s easy to say you’ll do it later, but why not just take the plunge and commit?
Aside from the bucket list items, I’ve also been enjoying some of my usual favorites, like eating lots of tacos and spending quality time at the beach. For more on what I’ve been loving for the past month, read all my favorites below!
June Favorites
Surfing – So, so happy we finally made this happen. Surfing has been on my San Diego bucket list since day 1, and I can officially say I’ve done it! …err…attempted it! A friend offered to take us out and show us the [super beginner] ropes, which I’m so grateful for. We more so tried to surf by getting projected forward on smaller waves, and it was more or less a success! I felt like I was just battling the waves the whole time to get farther out, but I’m proud to say I DID stand for approximately 2 seconds at one point. Matt and I both had a lot of fun and were quite tired after spending the morning out in the water. Oh, and funny story: the beach where we were originally planning to surf? We arrived and there was a full parking lot, vendors, and music playing. Turns out there was a surf competition, and we were like NOPE NOPE NOPE and found a much less populated and empty water area.
Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt – I’ve been buying tubs of plain Greek yogurt for years, and while I still do a lot, I’ve been religiously buying this Oikos Greek yogurt weekly for a few months. I usually steer clear of flavored yogurts because they’re usually full of sugar and weird ingredients, but this brand and type seems to be shockingly okay. Plus, they taste good and are almost always on sale, so WIN.
Wheel Of Fortune Answers (@wofanswers) – If you’re a fan of Wheel of Fortune, or even if you’re not, I thought this Twitter account was hilarious. They tweet their own answers to puzzles, and they are always weird and fit into the spaces. The more I read, the more they make me laugh.

Fire on the Horizon by Stick Figures – I’m still on my reggae kick that I mentioned last month in my May Favorites. This is one of my latest favorite songs.
Rita’s Italian Ice – I believe Rita’s originated on the East Coast, but they’ve opened up a bunch here in the San Diego area over the past five years, and I am oh-so happy about the development. First of all, I never realized how delicious Italian Ice is. Second, custard is divine. Put them together, and you get a bunch of glorious combos that are worth the splurge. The item below is my go-to order, the Gelati, with vanilla custard and strawberry or raspberry Italian ice. SO GOOD.
Mason Jars for Food Prep Storage – Even though I don’t food prep as extensively as I used to, our fridge somehow fills up with storage containers and produce in the beginning of the week, and it can be difficult to fit it all in there (without losing things). I’ve found mason jars to work surprisingly well since, at least the ones I have, are tall and skinny. Instead of having stacks upon stacks of food dishes everywhere, they’re easy to move around and take what you want. (Plus, they’re perfect for mason jar salads if you haven’t jumped on board that train yet.)
Mexico – Another item checked off our bucket list: go to Mexico! We also got out first passport stamps, so that was sadly exciting for us. Since we live extremely close to the border, we wanted to be able to say we went to Mexico since it’s relatively easy to do. We decided to walk across the border to Tijuana (ain’t nobody got time to sit in a sea of traffic for hours). Eventually we found the cantina we were looking for, so we got some tacos and a margarita (while watching a random World Cup game in Spanish…GOOOOOOOOOAL). Then we decided to just head back to the U.S. because 1. it was difficult to find where we were going without a GPS (we turned our phones off to avoid international charges) and 2. it was a bit intimidating (at least for me) because of crazy traffic, people trying to sell us stuff on the streets, and you know…the whole not speaking the language thing. All in all, I’m glad we did it, and it was an interesting (though short) experience!
Cherries – These sweet dark cherries are addictive and full of antioxidants. They’re at the peak of their season, which I’ve noticed lately in their reduced price at the store, so I’ve been stocking up and enjoying them as a juicy treat lately.
Goat Yoga – In case you didn’t see my post Monday, goat yoga is a thing, and it is amazing.
Hyperbole in a Half: The God of Cake – I don’t regularly read this blog, but what I have read is so outrageously funny. This post, The God of Cake, reminds me of my youth. The writer talks about her obsession with a cake her mom had made when she was young. It is spot-on how I felt about sugar when I was little. “…if I was allowed even a tiny amount of sugar, not only would I become intensely hyperactive, but the entire scope of my existence would funnel down to the singular goal of obtaining and ingesting more sugar.”
