Banana Split Trail Mix

August 24, 2018 by Katie

For a sweet and salty snack, try this banana split-inspired trail mix recipe that combines peanuts, chocolate chips, banana chips, dried cherries, and more!

Banana Split Trail Mix Recipe

One of the ways that I come up with new recipes is to take a classic and transform it into something entirely new—which is what happened with this new trail mix recipe.

I don’t think I’ve ever ordered a legitimate banana split in my life (hot fudge sundae or bust), but I can’t deny that the classic dish combines some great flavors and looks picture-perfect.

While there isn’t any ice cream in this trail mix (though this trail mix would actually be a great topping for a bowl of ice cream), I was excited when I realized how easy it would be to take the various components of a banana split and turn it into a snack using the dried version of the ingredients.

So I headed to Trader Joe’s to pull from their glorious wall of dried fruits and nuts. (I don’t go to TJ’s very often, but when I do, you’ll probably see me standing in this aisle for most of my trip, staring at all my options.)

Trail Mix with Bananas, Chocolate, Peanuts, Cherries

I thought I had shared multiple trail mix recipes on here over the years, but apparently I’ve only shared two: my Harvest Trail Mix and Sweet & Simple Trail Mix. Though I suppose that makes sense because those are the only combos I ever care to throw together. But now I’ve got a fancy third, thanks to my randomly getting inspired by banana splits.

Trail mix is a great on-the-go snack that you can throw in your bag for a quick boost of energy. I like to make a batch of it when I know I’ll be out of the house all day and will need some sustenance, or it also works well if you’ll be traveling and want a bit of sweet and salty.

I hope you enjoy this new banana split trail mix combo!

What’s your favorite ice cream concoction?

Do you ever make homemade trail mix? What ingredients do you use?
