If you’re a sangria fan, you’ll love these red wine sangria popsicles filled with fruit for an alcoholic frozen treat.
Get ready to bust out the vino because today is National Wine Day! To celebrate this wonderful holiday, I’ve prepared a boozy popsicle recipe for you. And if you don’t have time to make popsicles today, these would be a refreshing dish to bring to your next BBQ…hint hint, wink wink….Memorial Day is on Monday.
Sangria popsicles are something I’ve been wanting to try for awhile now, but for one reason or another (the wine was gone), I haven’t made them until recently. As I predicted, they were a good life decision.
I considered making legitimate Red Wine Sangria and pouring it into popsicles molds, but that’s a lot of work just to have to wait for them to freeze. So I went the easy route and just combined juice and wine with a bunch of fruit. Voila! Easy sangria popsicles that are in no way authentic but still taste delicious so I don’t care. ๐
This recipe is extremely versatile. Even if you mess with the ratios, your biggest problem is going to be having too little or too much liquid for your popsicle molds. They’re probably going to taste delicious no matter what you do, so there’s that. (And if you have too much, HELLO glass of sangria to drink while waiting for the rest to freeze.)
Before you make these, though, I want to share a couple tips:
- Add the fruit pieces to the molds first, not into the liquid mixture (this would probably result in a mess / complicated pouring process).
- Use a juice like cranberry, grape, cherry, or pomegrante. These all taste great with red wine.
- Only add parts of the fruit you actually want to consume. For example, if you’re adding oranges, take the rind off. And maybe don’t add lemons.
- Larger fruit pieces look pretty, but smaller pieces are easier to eat in popsicle form. Just an FYI.
I have a 6-popsicle moldโmore specifically, this one from Mamasiclesย (affiliate link), so I created my recipe to fit perfectly for that amount. If you need to make more than that, you can easily include more fruit in the molds to fill up space (adding more juice or wine as needed) or just double the whole recipe to make things easy.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup small fruit pieces (like sliced strawberries, clementine segments, and blueberries)
- 3/4 cup red wine (like merlot, syrah, or cabernet sauvignon)
- 1/3 cup juice
Instructions:
- Divide fruit among popsicle molds.
- Combine red wine and juice. Pour the mixture into the popsicle molds, leaving about 1/4 inch left at the top.
- Freeze for about 1 hour, then insert popsicle sticks to centers.
- Freeze until solid, about 8 hours.
Oh, and in case you’re curious: yes, red wine freezes just fine despite having alcohol content. It does freeze at a lower temperature, but your standard freezer should be cold enough to make it happen. Keep in mind, though, that since wine freezes at a lower temperature, it also melts faster at room temperature than your average popsicle. If I’m eating one of these popsicles inside the house, I like to have a plate or bowl underneath when I inevitably consume it too slowly and it starts to drip. Just something to keep in mind. ๐
