CrossFit, New Running Shoes, and an Elliptical Workout

September 9, 2012 by Katie

I’m such a creep. I absolutely love watching people working out on TV. Last year’s CrossFit Games are on today, and I’m hooked. It’s so amazing how strong some people are. Talk about inspiration!

If you’re not familiar with CrossFit, it’s a fitness program that is based on an extremely broad variety of strength and conditioning exercises. There are gyms all over that offer the intense CrossFit program, and it seems to be picking up in popularity.

Me? I would absolutely love to try it out someday, but until then, I shall drool over the amazing abilities of the top CrossFit athletes at the CrossFit Games.

Topic #2 for Today: New Running Shoes

I hate buying new running shoes because of the whole breaking-them-in thing. When I was breaking my last pair in, my feet strangely hurt for quite awhile. Maybe I was running too much in them too fast. This time it’s different though! I bought the Saucony Progrid Ride 5 running shoes, and I’ve been loving them. Plus, I think they’re pretty.

My feet have barely bothered me at all! I even wore them for my long run last week, and I felt fine besides a potential small blister. It’s a nice change of pace from my last pair of running shoes. I’ve never had Saucony-brand shoes, which made me nervous, but all is well. They are the neutral shoe I need and offer me good support for my arches. At this point I’d definitely recommend them.

For today’s workout I did most of an interval run but stopped early because I was really lacking energy for some reason. So, I only went 3 miles, but it still felt like a good workout. I added some bodyweight arm work to challenge myself a bit more after the run.

As I was stretching, I noticed the CrossFit Games were on. So, here I am, 3 hours later, and still in my workout clothes. I figured I should probably just not shower because I knew watching these crazy people would make me want to workout more. I’ll probably run a few more miles and/or do some more weight exercises. Gotta take advantage of the motivation, ya know?!

Topic #3: My Go-To Elliptical Interval Workout

I’ve been meaning to add an elliptical workout that I made awhile ago, but I haven’t had access to an elliptical in awhile so it just never came up. However, since I have a workout page without much on it, I figured I should probably add to it.

Whenever I go on an elliptical, I usually just do a variation of the following interval workout. It’s challenging yet doable.

GoTo Elliptical Workout

If I’m somehow not bored out of my mind by the 20-minute mark, I will extend it to at least 30 minutes and just keep doing the interval pattern.

Have you ever done CrossFit? Is it as amazing as it looks? Are you ripped?

How do you feel about ellipticals? I find them quite boring, but they’re a great way to cross train and be nicer to your joints from time to time. If you challenge yourself enough, an elliptical workout can make for a great workout!

My friend and I talked about doing CrossFit at this gym not too far from us not too long ago. I really want to try it though. I’m taking kickboxing and absolutely love it because it’s challenging, fun and hard. CrossFit might just be something else I may love.

I like the elliptical. It’s a good warm-up for me when I start exercising 🙂

That’s awesome! Kickboxing is something I’ve always wanted to try. I did boxing once and loved it. It’s such a great workout.

And I agree that the elliptical is good for warming up. I used to do it before lifting weights. It’s also nice when you workout in the morning and are still half asleep. Going through the motions helps wake you up.

I feel the same way about crossfit- have heard great things and haven’t had a chance to try it yet. And yes I haven’t been on an elliptical in years- this is why I do triathlon- easily bored!!!
Curious how the saucony’s work out for you. I need to make a change for my next running shoes purchase I think.

The Saucony’s were pretty good! They gave me blisters after a little while, which wasn’t the most fun, but for the most part, they worked well. I started running much farther distances towards the end of their life, so that may have contributed to all the blisters. They were my first Saucony running shoes, and I would consider trying out another version. Sometimes it’s just trial and error.

Yeah, I do CrossFit too and it is so amazing! It may be difficult at first, but the result? Truly amazing!
