They say yoga is amazing for the mind and body—that it can help you manage stress, reduce chronic pain, improve flexibility, and so much more.
In my limited practice, I’ve learned that yoga goes way beyond just “stretching.” While I used to view it as just…an underwhelming and mild workout, I’ve started to really appreciate the awareness it teaches you—both inside and outside the class.
Since, for personal reasons, the next few months of my life are going to be more stressful than usual, I’ve decided I want to jump into the last half of the year with a daily dose of reflection and relaxation. I’m going to do yoga every day for the next 30 days.
Sadly, it won’t (always?) be next to the crashing waves of Sunset Cliffs like my experience above, but I do hope to diversify where and with whom I yoga it up. This is a pretty relaxed challenge for myself, though I encourage anyone reading this to join me!
Here’s my game plan:
- Do yoga every day for 30 days straight
- Each yoga session can be as short as 10 minutes or as long as 1 hour or more
- Include a combination of in-person yoga classes and free online sessions
At this point, I’m just planning to do most of my yoga sessions by following Youtube videos. In my February Favorites, I mentioned one channel, in particular, that I enjoy: Yoga with Adriene. (She even has a 30-day yoga series.) But there’s a variety of channels that offer free classes if you look around. Sarah Beth Yoga is another one I’ve been recommended, so I’ll probably incorporate her videos into my schedule as well.
My goal is to also do a couple classes in person to break things up and ensure I’m practicing good form. As I mentioned in my Free Fit Activities in San Diego post, there are a lot of donation-based yoga classes by the water here that are soothing to the soul and comfortably low-key. Those will be the first ones I look into.
As I embark on this 30-day journey, I’m excited to embrace the yoga mindset (which doesn’t always come naturally to me), and see how it helps me find a bit of calmness and peace in every day.
Do you regularly practice yoga—whether at home or signing up for classes?
Is there a Youtube channel you like following for yoga videos?
