Oh, what a month it has been… Spring started, a pandemic was officially declared, and I can’t find whole wheat flour anywhere for my sourdough starter. In regards to the latter, I’m going to need everyone to stop hoarding food, so I can buy a single bag of flour to save my sourdough starter from taking a turn for the worse in the next week. (As mentioned in the recap of my year spent working through the Bread Baking for Beginners cookbook, using good-quality flour is essential for the health of a sourdough starter).
Aside from my flour problem—which I realize is a non-problem in the grand scheme of things—my lifestyle hasn’t really changed too much with Illinois’ stay-at-home order. Considering I’m already a homebody, it hasn’t been too difficult to hang out in our apartment over the past month, doing my part to help slow the spread of COVID-19 situation. I will say, though, I’m very thankful to have a job that allows me to work from home without any issue.
Since not too much has been going on in my personal life in March, my favorites are a bit more sparse than normal. But I mean, there are penguins featured, so that makes up for it.
March Favorites
Penguins Explore the Shedd Aquarium – Since the Shedd Aquarium has been closed, the workers took the penguins on a tour of other exhibits. It’s magical.
Veggie & Grain Bowls – I don’t usually make my lunch ahead of time anymore, since I work from home and have access to everything all the time. But I decided to make meal-prep a veggie and grain bowl recently that was surprisingly good. This one includes wheat berries, mushrooms, leeks, asparagus, walnuts, lemon juice, and salt/pepper. Simple but delish!
Where the Wild Things Are by Labrinth – I’ve been loving the vibe of this song. Others from Labrinth that I really like include Express Yourself and Earthquake.
My First Blackhawks Game in the United Center – This was much earlier in the month, but Matt and I finally bought some tickets to a Hawks game—something I’ve been wanting to do before we move to the suburbs within the next few months (not really any updates on the house hunt, unfortunately). First of all, they won which was obviously great. But my favorite part was probably the national anthem. Unlike most/all other teams, Blackhawk fans are loud AF when it’s sung, cheering and screaming. Might sound weird, but it’s momentous, let me tell you.
Becoming by Michelle Obama – I just finished this ebook on my Kindle last week, and I love Michelle Obama even more than before. Even if you don’t agree with the Obamas’ politics, you can’t deny that Michelle is an extremely hard-working and accomplished woman. Reading her book definitely left me feeling inspired.
Mario Kart – It’s weird to rave about a Wii at this point, but after acquiring Matt’s old Wii from his parents, we then borrowed some more games from my sister and BIL, including the best video game of all time: Mario Kart. It’s been a welcome distraction from not being able to go out and do much lately.
Gettin a New FitBit – I talked more about this in my pros and cons of using a step counter post last Friday, but I wanted to highlight my new Inspire HR. After not thinking I’d want to wear another Fitbit, I decided to get a new one (my old one stopped working after a few years of neglect). The goal was to motivate myself to walk a little bit more throughout my days working from home. Well it’s definitely been helping me move a bit more! (P.S. Anyone else living in their pajamas lately?)
What have you been doing to stay busy/entertained lately?
