June Favorites

June 24, 2020 by Katie

I’m starting to lose track of what month it is, but I remembered to share my end-of-the-month favorites, so that’s something! Today’s list has a lot of house-related items because that’s been our life lately. As of last weekend, we’re officially done painting, which is a huge task to mark off our to-do list. The house is still in disarray, but it’s slowly coming together!

Keep reading for some of my favorite ways of getting organized, exercising my green thumb, and staying entertained!

June Favorites

New Plants at New Homes – I’ve moved 5 times within the past 7 years, and one thing I enjoy with every move? Discovering what’s growing around the new apartment/house! As we’ve been settling into our new house, we’ve watched the landscaping evolve, and it’s so fun to see! I’ve been shocked at how many flowers keep popping up everywhere. And we just learned there are chives in a random spot. I’m loving the surprises! Now I just need to figure out what all these plants are so I know how to take care of them…

Rainbow Bookshelf – Around the time of our last move, I was reading a couple books about interior design and organization, and among the little things I picked up? Organizing bookshelves by color! It’s such a tiny, unnecessary thing, but it really is so aesthetically pleasing. I’ve learned 1. we have too many black and white books; 2. I have a new addiction for buying books (especially collecting classics) to add more colors; and 3. I just need more books in general. Some might say books accumulate fast and lead to clutter, but I’m ALL about it these days. It’s art!… or something!

“Dad, how do I?” Videos – This dad started a YouTube channel to share simple how-to videos on things that most people learn from their dads. I thought it was such a sweet concept, especially for those who might not have a father to teach them how to do these things.

Mini Garden in Pots – I’m waiting to plant an in-ground garden until next year when I have more time to dedicate to it, but I have two pepper plants, a tomato plant, and basil all in pots right now (RIP the mint and cilantro that barely took off). I can’t imagine how much joy a full garden will bring me next summer, because just having a few crops right now has been way too exciting for me.

Symbols by Adrienne Lenker – No idea how I found this song, but I find it so peaceful and pleasant.

Lazy Susan Spice Organization – I have strong feelings about spice organization. I loved our large corner lazy Susan system at our last apartment, but when we moved into our new house, I mostly just had a skinny tall cabinet to work with (which we’ve had in the past and I didn’t like how it buried all our spices). I decided to try out a set of lazy Susans (AKA, rotating trays) to see how it worked out. Well, turns out it works quite well, and I’m pretty proud of it.

What We Do in the Shadows – We binge-watched this show over the past week or two, and we keep quoting it because we loved it. It’s a “mockumentary” about vampires, which might sound dumb. And it is dumb. But it’s hilarious and I recommend watching a few episodes to try it out.

Uninvited by BELLSAINT – When I first heard this song (cover of Alanis Morissette’s song) while watching the new Little Fires Everywhere series on Hulu (also recommend, by the way), it really stuck out to me. It’s haunting and intriguing.

What have some of your favorites been over the course of the last month?
