Hot Lemon Ginger Water with Honey

January 25, 2019 by Katie

Warm up with a mug of this hot lemon, ginger, and honey water that can aid in digestion, ease a sore throat, and help an upset stomach.

There are two reasons why this recipe brings me so much joy: 1. I recently discovered how delicious this simple combo is and am excited to share it, and 2. I somehow managed to get just enough natural daylight to take decent pics, despite it being wintry AF and the sun rarely showing itself

The reason I felt inspired to try this combo was because I am absolutely overwhelmed with fresh ginger root right now. Random, I know. This is what happens when you send someone out with your grocery list and forget to explain exactly what you want for certain items.

So Matt comes home with the most ginger I have ever had in my life, and I just laughed, telling him I have no idea how I’d use it all. Ginger is typically pretty cheap, though, so thankfully it’s not like he shelled out for the excessive amount of ginger.

In an effort to use as much ginger as possible this week, I’ve been trying to use a little every day. Aside from mealtime, I realized this would be the perfect time to try something I’ve always wanted to try: hot lemon and ginger water.

Needless to say, I tried it once and was immediately hooked. I was actually surprised how delicious it was considering it’s just…ginger and lemon steeped in hot water, with a little honey for sweetness. Ever since that first cup, I’ve had it probably at least once every day (and my stash of ginger is getting used up pretty quickly).

There are a lot of bold health claims out there for lemon water or lemon/ginger water, but I just want to state some simple facts so you’re familiar with the magic that’s in your cup

  • Ginger is known for its ability to improve a stomach ache and reduce nausea.
  • Lemon is packed with vitamin C, contains fiber, and has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory compounds.
  • Honey is full of antioxidants and can be useful for soothing a sore throat.

Some people call this lemon ginger tea, but it seems like more of a flavored water to me, so that’s what I’m calling it. (You could easily make this into a sort of hot toddy, too, by adding bourbon/whiskey. #JustSayin)

Although I’m not sick right now (somehow managed to avoid that all winter…knocks on wood), I’m really enjoying how soothing this warm drink is in the morning. I fully plan to try it out the next time I have a sore throat or upset stomach to see if it helps at all

Hot Lemon Ginger Water with Honey

Servings 1

Ingredients

  • 1- inch piece of fresh ginger root, peeled and sliced
  • 1-2 slices fresh lemon
  • 8 oz hot water
  • 1 tsp pure honey

Instructions

  • Add ginger and lemon slices to the bottom of a mug, and pour hot water over the top.
  • Let steep until the water is cool enough to drink. Stir in honey.

And something I didn’t know until I started researching the ingredients: if you mix in your honey to the hot/boiling water, this can affect some of its health properties. That’s why I add it after the water has cooled off enough for me to drink it. If you don’t care, though, it’s definitely easier to just add it all in at once and go about your day.

Do you swear by any natural home remedies when you’re not feeling well?

What’s your favorite way to use fresh ginger?
