Embracing Routine for a Healthy Diet

May 15, 2017 by Katie

Sometimes I share lists of healthy tips because 1. lists make me happy and 2. it’s a combination of efforts that makes healthy living a reality. I’m switching things up today, though, because there’s one healthy tip I want to put in the spotlight—the magic of routine.

Every time I read about people who have seemed to master the healthy eating thing, I’m inspired and fascinated by their dedication. One of the most common traits I’ve noticed? They eat the same foods all the time. They’ve established a routine and don’t seem to ever care about switching it up. Oh, also? They actually enjoy what they’re eating. They don’t eat the same thing every day because they want to torture themselves into looking fit…they have found foods they genuinely love and feel great eating. So they just keep at it (with mild changes every once in awhile, of course).

How routine can aid a healthy diet

I’ve noticed in my own healthy living journey that routine is what keeps me on track. I eat the same thing for breakfast every day (cream of wheat with egg whites or egg white oatmeal), and my snacks are extremely similar from day to day, as well (Greek yogurt, apple with nut butter, or lemon protein cake bars). I’ve learned what foods I love and don’t get sick of, and that makes it so much easier to eat healthy on a consistent basis—without having to think. Lunch and dinner I’m still working on finding routine staples, but I’m hoping to get a few nourish/macro/buddha bowl recipes established for easy, nutritious meals.

If you’ve found some foods you love and don’t get sick of, I encourage you to put them in a weekly, if not daily, rotation! Since eating the same thing every day can get boring, and that just dooms us for falling off track with our health goals, I’ve got a couple tips. (Okay, I lied. I’m making a list because I don’t know how not to anymore.)

Here are a few ways I’ve found to really help make eating the same foods all the time actually appealing.

4 Ways to Make Routine Work for You

  1. Try variations of the same dishes you love (like oatmeal, salads, etc.).
  2. If you find something you can’t get enough of, you might as well just keep eating it.
  3. Rotate between a few options so you’re having a bit of variety in your recurring dishes.
  4. Don’t eat the same thing every day if you hate it (it makes it so much harder to stay committed).

So many of us struggle with finding healthy options, which is why I think if we can all find some legit staples to eat on a routine basis—and stick with it—we might start seeing the results we’re looking for.

Do you eat similar foods every day?

What are some of your go-to healthy options that you don’t get sick of?
