You’re the Average of Your Friends

August 17, 2018 by Katie

Some quotes just hit me right at the core. I am ALL about inspirational quotes, as you may have noticed with all my quote sharing over the past year. While I thoroughly enjoy the ones that provide a call to action to improve your life, I also really love the sayings that offer more of a…blunt truth. They’re the ones that make you realize something you may or may not want to realize about yourself, but above all, they make you think.

One such quote that, whenever I stumble across it, stops me in my tracks and plunges me into a state of reflection is the following:

You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with.

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This is a quote by the motivational speaker/author Jim Rohn, and I’ve always found it to be so fascinating to think about.

Who are the top five friends, family members, coworkers, or other connections that you find yourself with the majority of the time? Whether you want them to or not, these people heavily impact how you think, speak, and act. It’s funny, actually, because when I get closer to people, I start to notice myself taking on their mannerisms or general attitude. Sometimes it’s wonderful; other times, I realize I might…need…some space…

This is just a reminder to minimize your interactions with “toxic” people and surround yourself with the energy that uplifts you and makes you happy. While I’ve always found the concept of “cutting out friends” to be bizarre, I can’t deny that simply allowing some space can sometimes be for the best.

As we enter this weekend and many of us are catching up with friends, I encourage you to stop and think about how they affect the way you think. Is there a positive/negative influence? Attitudes are contagious. Make sure you’re soaking up the ones you want (and spreading the right ones as well)!
