Make the ultimate green smoothie by combining fresh ingredients like celery, cucumber, romaine, and spinach with lemon and banana for a bit of sweetness and spirulina powder for a superfood boost.
I think I’ve come up with the ultimate green smoothie recipe—which comes at a great time because yours truly overindulged in a bit too much sugar over the weekend (hellooo, homemade cinnamon rolls) and could use a drink packed with all the veggies.
I’ve actually been making this recipe a couple times per week over the past few weeks. It’s based off a different recipe I found that has way more ingredients, and there’s no way I can keep a massive variety of veggies on hand and consume it all before it goes bad. So I cut back on the original recipe and made this slightly more simplified version.
Okay, so it still has a decent number of ingredients, but I assure you…it’s worth it. (Also, confession: I have no respect for the “Fill Line” of our blender cups, so shout-out to our NutriBullet for always dealing with my excessiveness.)
A couple things you should know about this “ultimate” smoothie:
- It has a very GREEN color—to the point that you might question what I’m doing over here.
- Although there are a LOT of vegetables, the banana and pear + the lemon cut right through any weirdness to make it taste yummy.
- I’ve finally got a reason to use the spirulina powder I recently bought! No biggie if you don’t have it, but if you do, it’s beautifully disguised in here.
I just restocked back up on all the ingredients this past weekend so I could continue making this, which I’m pretty pumped about. Because if you look at the ingredients list, blend it all together, then realize you actually like what you’re drinking? It’s ridiculous to think how unbelievably healthy you are being. Like, this smoothie makes me feel like I’m the epitome of good heath. So ya, hence the “Ultimate Green Smoothie” title. You’ll see what I’m talking about below.
Ingredients:
- 1 celery stalk, chopped
- 1/4 cucumber, chopped
- 1/2 pear, cored and chopped
- 1/2 banana, chopped
- Small handful chopped romaine
- Small handful spinach
- Juice from half of a lemon (about 1-2 Tbs)*
- 1 tsp spirulina powder**
- 1 cup water
Instructions:
- Place all ingredients in a blender, and puree until smooth.
Notes:
*To better mask the taste of the veggies and spirulina, add more lemon juice. **You can omit the spirulina powder if you don't have any on hand.
This might be easier to make two servings of, so if you have a buddy to make a bigger batch of this to enjoy with, I encourage that. But since I always just make this for myself, I wanted to share the single-serving version (hence the halved banana and pear).
I hope you enjoy this as much as I have been! Yes, it definitely tastes healthy, but I’m always so impressed with how much it actually tastes good too. Salud!
