Fall has arrived! And we’re nearing the holiday season! I’m puuuumped about both of these (though I’m not too thrilled about the noticeable difference in daylight hours lately). I’d like fall and winter without that whole…shorter days…thing. Thanks.
I’ve got some good stuff in this month’s list of favorite things—from new music discoveries to style trends I’m loving and how I’m spicing up my morning commute. Check it all out below!
September Favorites
Trip to DC – September started with my first trip to Washington, DC! The main goal was to spend the long Labor Day weekend visiting family, but Matt and I got to see several monuments and museums while we were there. Although it was hot AF with a touch of rain, it was SUCH a good weekend. I’m so happy I’ve finally gotten to experience the grandness of the architecture and how overwhelming it is to simply be in a place with so much history. We even ended up being on the path of John McCain’s motorcade (his funeral events were that weekend), which was pretty cool to witness.

Listening to Podcasts While Commuting – I commute about 30-40 minutes to get to my full-time job during the week, and the radio gets pretty boring. I’ve been trying to get into podcasts—something I’ve never even tried until recently—to make my time spent in the car a little bit more entertaining and rewarding. Below are some of the channels I’ve downloaded episodes from. There aren’t really any channels I’m hooked on? So I just frequently search through the nutrition, fitness, and personal development areas of Google Play Music on my Android. Then I download anything that piques my interest and choose whatever I’m in the mood for before I start my drives. It’s a nice way to mix things up. (If you recommend any podcasts, do share! I’m constantly looking for more.)
Friends in the Background – Any time I’m busy doing stuff around the house lately, I’ve started putting Friends on in the background, so I’m slowly making my way through the seasons on Netflix. Even though I’m not actively watching it at any point, it’s been making me really happy because I’m listening to the scenes I basically know by heart. If you’re a Friends fan, I highly recommend it to create a pleasant atmosphere.
Kill Your Heroes by AWOLNATION – Not sure where this song has been hiding over the years, but I’ve started to love the sound and the message. At first the lyrics sound like a downer, but after further investigation, I’ve learned it’s all about doing what you’re passionate about, not feeling limited by the bar set by others, and not caring what they think—basically: stop waiting and start living.
Shirts That Tie – I have this habit of buying plain clothes, especially shirts. I’ve realized this because my wardrobe is pretty boring as a result. Thankfully, there seems to be a trend of shirts having a simple tie at the bottom, and I love the little extra something to make otherwise-basic shirts look more stylish. This one that I’m trying to pose “naturally” for is from Express.
Dissolve Me by alt-J – This band is not talked about enough. alt-J has such a unique sound (that I assume would throw some people off). But there’s just something about their songs that soothe my soul and complement a variety of moods. I recently started playing this track on repeat.
Roxy Bayshore Slip-On Sneaker – I absolute love these tennis shoes. Originally, I was considering getting yet another pair of Converse (but their newer slip-on version), but as I was strolling through the aisles of DSW several months ago, this pair of Roxy shoes caught my attention. They’re exactly what I wanted: basic, casual, and pretty comfortable. I’ve actually gotten a lot of compliments on them, which I would have never expected because they’re so simple. But if you’re looking for a casual sneaker, Roxy has a variety of designs in this same type of shoe!
DIY Bracelets – Hi, my name is Katie, and I join fashion trends super late. Everyone and their sister have started stacking bracelets up their wrist for the past few years, and I’m finally down to join the phenomenon. Except I’m cheap and have an obsession with customization, so I spent an hour+ this past weekend making six bracelets using the most perfect beads I got on sale at Michaels. While there are certain spots where they definitely look “homemade,” I am super excited about them.
Figure It Out by Royal Blood – This is good “jam” music—whatever that means. I like listening to this song, along with so many from Royal Blood, as the soundtrack to…really anything. It creates a pleasant and upbeat ambiance.
