For a green smoothie that’s full of basic, good-for-you ingredients, try this refreshing combination that gets its flavor profile from fruits and veggies like apple, celery, spinach, and banana.
Happy March!! Spring is so close that I can almost taste the tulips (too weird?). With the glorious spring season comes the chance for renewal and growth following a long winter deprived of sunshine. Did you know March is also National Nutrition Month?
The month-long campaign was created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for the purpose of inspiring and educating people to get to know their food choices and start adopting healthy eating habits and getting active. In honor of National Nutrition Month, I’m sharing a shiny new green smoothie recipe!
After diving deep into the concept of how to make a green smoothie last week, I decided I wanted to branch out and try more recipes to share with the world. My first attempt was mostly a success (and I was weirdly pumped about it). Once I made a few tweaks, though, I knew I had perfected the optimal smoothie flavor.
My favorite part of this smoothie is the celery (yes, really). I recently discovered that I LOVE the flavor it adds. I was skeptical at first about how its stringy, crunchy texture would affect the final result, but as long as you’ve got a good blender, you don’t even notice it—we have and love the NutriBullet Sport (affiliate link).
As you can see above, there’s a pretty even mix of greenery and fruit. I also added ground flaxseed (for a boost of omega-3 fatty acids and more fiber) and a spritz of fresh lemon juice. I love this smoothie without the lemon, personally, but after I tried it with some, I knew I had to include it in the recipe because YUM.
Originally, I also included vanilla protein powder, but after making this a couple times, I realized it had too much of an overpowering artificial taste. So this one is staying super basic: fruits, veggies, flaxseed, and water.
Ingredients:
- Handful spinach
- 1/2 banana
- 1 medium apple, cored and roughly chopped (I used Gala)
- 1 celery stalk, roughly chopped
- 2 tsp ground flax seed
- 1 Tbs fresh lemon juice
- 1/2-1 cup water
Instructions:
- Add all ingredients (in order*) to a blender. Blend until smooth.
Notes:
*To make sure the ingredients blend easily, add the softer ingredients (spinach and banana) on the bottom closest to the blade and the bigger, denser ingredients (apple and celery) farthest away.
