Whether you wear them while working out, running errands, or doing absolutely nothing, there’s no denying that active wear is the bee’s knees. Workout clothes are pretty much all I wear during my workweek, now that I’m a full-time remote employee. I mean…if the clothes are comfortable, then why deny the joy of wearing them all the time?
In honor of workout clothes being so stylish these days and appropriate for almost all occasions, I’ve gathered my top five favorite stores to buy them from. Something you should know: I don’t like to shell out for super fancy active wear, and I feel like others can relate. You want decent clothes for “working out,” and you don’t want to spend all your money to get something cute and functional.
Check out the list of stores I highly recommend for those wanting some functional, comfortable, and trendy clothes for lounging…err…working out.
1. Marshalls
The #1 place I like to buy workout clothes is Marshalls, hands down. I’m not always looking for something specific when I go there, but I like to peruse their active gear section to see if there’s hidden treasures. They have amazing sales on really good brands. My favorite item to buy there is workout capris and leggings. Since there’s a variety of brands there, I find it easier to find the right fit. So sales + large selection + variety of brands = you’re bound to find something. You’re welcome. I’m sorry.
2. Old Navy
If you’re looking for cute workout clothes, drop everything and go to Old Navy. Ahora! They’re one of my newer favorites for active wear. I have some really awesome capris from here, several tank tops (including the one above), some colorful shorts, and a couple pull-overs. I just love their variety of fitness apparel, and it’s all really cute.
3. Target
No list about clothes is complete without Target, let’s be real. I actually don’t have many workout clothes from Target, but they have a pretty solid selection of all-the-things. I mostly have low impact sports bras from Target because they’re comfy, but I also wear my yoga pants and the capris above all the time while I’m just hanging out at home (apparently upside down?).
4. Online
Funny story, I’ve never actually bought workout clothes online, at least from what I can remember. So why would I add it to this list, you wonder? Because I’ve been gifted multiple pieces (most of which I straight-up asked for) that I love. I have a couple tank tops with fun messages, including the “This is my handstand shirt” above. It can be easier to find unique items online if you’re looking for something specific. I think all my online workout clothes came from either Amazon or Etsy.
5. Road Runner
This spot on the list doesn’t really apply to me anymore, but if you’re a runner, I highly recommend Road Runner for workout apparel and running shoes. My all-time favorite high-impact sports bras are from here. They have decent sales, but I’m quite partial to the actual RRS “generic” brand of things. I have running socks, a tank top (pictured above that I wore during my marathon once upon a time), and several pairs of past running shoes from here.
Honorable Mentions
There are some other stores that I’ve come to love, as well, but I don’t have quite as much from them yet so they didn’t make the cut.
- Gap
- Kohl’s
- Victoria’s Secret (Sport)
- Dick’s
P.S. It looks like most of my favorite workout clothes are all the same color, based on the pictures above. In reality, I have more pink than anything, which I’ve tried really hard to stray from. (Matt slaps pink clothes out of my hands when he’s with me at stores, because I’ve complained about how much pink I have haha). While I care about color, I more so pick workout clothes based on the style and fit.
Where are most of your workout clothes from?
Do you wear activewear mostly to work out? Or is it your at-home uniform like it is for me?

Marshalls is totally my #1 place too! The variety, options, colors, and plethora of styles is seriously just too good to be true. Ive walked in there before in need of jeans and came out with 4 workouts outfits. Its awesome!
Katie says
Haha right!? I do the same thing.
Rebecca @ Strength and Sunshine says
Old Navy is my go to!
Katie says
Yesss, that place is the best.

I have so many nike shorts that I have collected over the last ten years. but I never ever bought workout tanks. Like ever. I always ran in cotton t’s and every time I go for a run now I’m like whhhhhhhyyy. I hate running in cotton. It’s hot it sticks to you and it sucks. So my new mission is running tanks and I’m liking this list. Thanks for the tips! This may have been dangerous lol 🙂
Katie says
Haha it might be! I used to only run in cotton t-shirts as well, but now I’m all about the moisture wicking fabrics. I have the easiest time finding cheap tanktops at Old Navy, so definitely check there!

road runner does have great stuff! So I just sold some of my stuff on poshmark and they have a great selection if you know what you want. I am all about wearing my yoga pants all day long 🙂
Katie says
Haha yoga pants are too comfy not to wear all the time. I don’t blame you.

I’ve never tried Marshalls workout clothes, but I’ve heard that Old Navy always has winners from many people! I really love BodyPOP activewear and Asics 🙂
Katie says
I’ve never heard of BodyPOP, but I definitely have to agree on ASICS. They have some really awesome running clothes.
Janelle @Wholly Healthy says
I really love Cory Vines! I think half my workout wardrobe is from them.
Katie says
I’ve never heard of Cory Vines, but it’s always nice to have a go-to place where you know you can find some awesome workout clothing!

This is awesome! I’ve never shopped for workout clothes at any of these places. Thanks for the tip 🙂
Katie says
Ah well I highly recommend checking them out! Lots of treasures to be found. 🙂

I manage to make at least one piece of workout clothes fit into my work outfits every day! It makes things ever so much more comfy at work plus reminds me that the plan is to hit the gym later.
I love TJ Maxx (marshall’s sister store), Target, and Old Navy too. Although the Old Navy workout pants rarely fit me right. (I’m short, they aren’t.)
Katie says
I like your trick of wearing at least one piece of workout clothes every day. Clever!

Great list! I love Old Navy for workout clothes. I also like the Tek-Gear brand at Kohls…stylish & very affordable {especially if you have a coupon}!
Katie says
Oo good to know! I don’t shop at Kohls as much as I used to, but I might need to wander in there again.
Nicole @ Fitful Focus says
Great list! My boyfriend got me a lot of those fun shirts from Etsy for my last birthday :). Marshalls/T.J.Maxx are great for inexpensive gear and Target can be dangerous, but most of my workout clothes are from Fabletics!
Katie says
Jealous of all your fun shirts! And from what I’ve heard (partially from your blog haha), you can’t go wrong with Fabletics.
