My Job as a Writer

April 17, 2014 by Katie

A lot of the time, I find it strange to tell people details about my life because I often wonder, “Who even cares?” But personally, I find it fascinating to read about people’s lives.

Creepy? Definitely.

I actually attended a social event for local PR professionals last night, and it was fun to talk about my job, as well as this blog. I’ve always been especially vague when it comes to my job on here, and while I will continue to keep specifics of it to myself for privacy reasons, I figured I’d share a little bit about what I actually do for a living. I love learning about people’s jobs and what they’re passionate about. Since you people hear about my passion for fitness on here, here’s a little bit about my day-to-day work:

Being a Writer

My Workspace

My Workspace

I got my current job a little over a year ago, and it has been absolutely amazing.

It’s a marketing-focused agency, and our clients are in the elective healthcare industry, which means I write for doctors like dentists, ophthalmologists, plastic surgeons, and orthopaedic surgeons.

Aka – I have weirdly extensive knowledge in procedures like breast augmentation, facelifts, hip replacement, gum disease treatment, dental implants, and LASIK. It’s actually kind of fun to learn such in-depth details about these random topics. I never thought I’d be explaining the different types of breast implants you can get, but it’s always an adventure at the office. You get broken into the awkwardness of some topics pretty fast (like when a page with before and after pictures is up on the projector during a meeting.)

My job has made me realize how much I love writing about health. Yes, a lot of it is cosmetic, but there’s always an underlying theme of being healthy and happy.

It’s an interesting balance going from writing about surgeries in a professional form and then coming back home to write sarcastic, random blog posts for GMHO. It keeps writing interesting, though, and helps me practice different voices. My position at work involves writing press releases, procedural pages for healthcare clients’ websites, blog posts for clients, and other randomness. It has been a wonderful learning experience, in the sense of writing and general medical knowledge.

Not knowing exactly what I wanted to do for a living before, during, or after college, I find it amazing that I’ve gotten where I’m at. Being unemployed led me to working a few internships, which led me to my current position. I feel blessed to have landed in a health-focused career, and I can’t wait to see where the future takes me!

Hope you’re having an awesome Friday, and have a happy Easter!!

Have you always known what you wanted pursue for a career?

What’s your ideal job?

Haha thanks, sister! Gum disease is a scary thing, so you better believe I’m going to recommend potential treatment options for every little problem you encounter in the future.
