My name is Katie, and it has been 6 days since my last workout. I’ve been waiting for a bad sun rash all over my chest and shoulders to go away, which it almost has, so I think it’s time I get back into the swing of things.
Thinking about going back to my usual running and circuit workout schedule isn’t too exciting though. It’s doesn’t seem too horrible, but what ever happened to doing things for fun? I feel like I’ve lost touch with the fun that comes with having an active lifestyle. This leads me to my curiosity about workout classes.
There are SO many possibilities out there! And I love trying crazy new things.
I’ve only ever gone to one boxing class with Matt, but I’m really curious about the many fitness classes out there. The only problem is…I hate doing things alone—I’m that person that always needs a buddy when trying new things. The only problem is, I’m new to the San Diego area, and all my close friends are thousands of miles away.
I’m pretty sure I would love a lot of classes out there, like barre, yoga, spinning, crossfit, or body pump (they all sound awesome), but I fear I’ll go and feel too awkward to have fun. So I guess we’ll see where the future takes me! One way or another, though, I look forward to seeing what fun fitness adventures this city has to offer.
Do you feel usually feel awkward when trying new fitness classes alone?
Do you go to any fitness classes regularly?

My first time at Group Power (which is like Body Pump, just a different company) I was so scared. I was the only person under 30 (I was 14 at the time). But after that first class I fell in love. Everyone is there to get a great workout, no one cares about your ability. There are always new people and the veterans. People modify, choose their own weights and do what they can! I have been going to years now and I am so glad that I was brave enough that first class to try it!

Aww that’s awesome! I figured it was just the first couple times that may suck, so I guess I should just endure it to get to the point where I really enjoy classes.

It really can be hard to break out and try new things, like group-ex classes. I’m an instructor and I feel this way when I have to go sub a class and I don’t “know” the group! But you won’t know what you could possibly love until you try! It really helps if you can grab the instructor before class starts and just let him/her know that you’re new (good instructors will ask anyway). And before you know it, you won’t be the newbie anymore! I love group-ex and couldn’t imagine working out alone anymore. And though I’m not an avid spinner, I feel like that’s one of the safest environments if you’re shy – its just each person and his/her bike. No one will know if you’re faking a certain intensity (to a degree anyway).
I hope you get out there and have a GREAT time!! And BodyPump is awesome. I got to be a participant today and it definitely rocked my world.

Haha love it. Thanks for the great advice! I’ll have to go searching for classes nearby.

Hi there!
I just found your blog and I’m also a San Diego runner! As for fitness classes – I started going for the first time in like 2007 and it was totally scary the first time but once I went to one (turbo kick box at 24 hour fitness) it was easy to try others. I’ve done nearly all of them at this point – spin, kickboxing, body pump, boot camp, pilates, hot yoga, yoga, barre classes (3 different studios). It’s so fun to try new things! Don’t be scared! Just tell the teacher it’s your first time when you first come in and they will explain the equipment and the format.

Thanks for the encouragement. 🙂 I hope I get to try all of those someday!

Zumba. So fun. Might not be a tough enough workout for you but its something when you lack motivation. I did aqua zumba when I was pregnant. It was just enough of a workout. Having a scheduled time I need to be there helps me actually go.

Not tough enough? Psh. You’re funny. I hear zumba can be intense! I’ve never heard of aqua zumba, but it sounds intriguing. I’ve never actually tried zumba, but I know Ashley loves it.
